War verh. mit Joy F. Stud. ebd.: Brunswick Technical School; 1944-47 Melbourne Technical College. 1944-48 Lehre als Schildermaler. Reisen: 1949-51 Belgien, Großbritannien, Holland, Irland; 1960-61 Japan, SO-Asien (Peace Congress Travel Prize); 1962-63 Großbritannien, Europa; 1965 USA (Harkness Fellowship). Lehrtätigkeit: 1952-56 Melbourne School of Printing and Graphic Arts. 1956-60 Mitarb. für Ausst., NG of Victoria, Melbourne. Ab 1960 konzentriert er sich auf die eig. Kunsttätigkeit. 1963-68 entsteht ein mon. Glas-Gem. als Decke für die Große Halle der NG of Victoria. Ab 1970 vorwiegend architekturgebundene Glasmalerei. Preise: 1958 Crouch Prize, Ballarat; 1960 Perth Prize, AG of Western Australia; Sulman Prize, AG of New South Wales; 1963, '80 Blake Prize; 1964 Georges Invitation Prize; W.D. and H.O. Wills Prize. 1969 Member of the Order of the Brit. Empire; 1972 Ehrendoktor der Monash Univ. - Anfangs beeinflußt von den mexikan. Muralisten. Später thematisiert er, auf ma. Darst.-Weisen zurückgreifend, vielfach das Leben und die Taten herausragender Personen, wobei er mit flächigen, abstrahierend-geometr. Mustern anthropomorphe Formen andeutet, z.B. Iliad series (1952), Odyssey series (1955) und Campion series (über den kath. Märtyrer Thomas Campion; 1962). In F.s Gem., Wand- und Glasmalereien finden sich daher zahlr. trad. Symbole wie Kreuz, Fisch, Schlange und Weinranken. Aus Entrüstung über den Staatsstreich in Chile von 1973 knüpft er mit der Serie Death of a Revolution (1974-76) noch einmal an die Monumentalität seiner soz. motivierten Werke der Anfangszeit an, vermeidet jedoch deren Tiefenräumlichkeit und heroischen Optimismus. F. arbeitet in Öl, synthet. Email sowie Lack und mit Vergoldung. Die Graphik (bes. Lith. und Siebdruck) entsteht zumeist während der Lehrtätigkeit an der Melbourne School of Printing and Graphic Arts; in den frühen 60er Jahren außerdem eine Folge von Rad.
